What to look for when buying riding breeches?

Silicone full seat or knee patch? The silicone on the seat area (that’s where the name derives from) gives a great grip in the saddle to help riders feel as comfortable and firm as possible. A plus? Usually have very nice geometric patterns that add a touch of style to your outfit. Knee patch breeches instead, help increase the rider’s grip on the horse, which provides a little more control while riding.

If you are planning to ride for long hours under the sunlight you may consider looking for textiles with added UV +50 protection. In fact not every textile is the same. Look for breeches with specific weave structures and denier (related to thread count per inch) that ensure sun protective properties.

What are the best fabrics for equestrian breeches?

Breeches can be made in a huge variety of fabrics. Cotton or blends of cotton are the most common because they are comfortable and soft at the touch. On the other hand, cotton doesn’t absorb moisture well so that breeches may become wet and damp as you sweat. Advanced microfibers are quickly gaining in popularity with riders. These fabrics provide excellent breathability and they wick away moisture from your body, always a plus on hot summer days. Some fabrics are designed to keep riders warm in the winter by providing excellent thermal protection.

Independently of the fabric you choose, make sure it is stretchable enough and allow you complete freedom of movement when riding.
If you are a fan of freedom though, you must opt for a 4-way stretch fabric such as spandex. This much loved material supports stretches in both directions, crosswise and lengthwise and are so far the best solutions to wrap the legs without

The most important thing:
Breeches are designed to fit snugly and not rub when horse riding. Sewing stitches should always create the minimum thickness and be positioned in areas that do not create friction with the saddle.
